Why Training & Experience Matter in Family Photography

When you’re trusting someone with your family’s memories, it’s worth asking a simple question: how much do they really know what they’re doing?

The truth is, anyone can pick up a camera and call themselves a photographer. But when things don’t go to plan — a toddler has a meltdown, the dog won’t sit still, or the light just isn’t right — experience and training make all the difference. That’s the moment when families either get let down, or they get the best portraits of their lives.

At GWS, we’ve always believed families deserve the latter. Over the years we’ve won more than 20 national awards across baby, pet, wedding and family photography — and even one for the way we look after our clients. Grahame is trained to Fellowship level, the highest qualification in portraiture, and has mentored photographers from all over the UK. He’s also judged national competitions, which means he’s seen first-hand what separates a “good enough” photo from something truly special.

Leanne is a qualified professional in her own right, bringing her own eye and energy to our sessions. And Allison, while she never touches a camera, has an extraordinary gift for creating the warm, fun atmosphere that families love. Her input elevates every shoot, and it’s often the reason children (and parents!) walk away saying how much fun they had.

All of this matters for one reason: you. We’ve put years into training and refining what we do because we care enough to make sure you get the best possible results. Not just “nice pictures,” but portraits that make you smile every time you see them at home.

That’s what separates us from the crowd. Not just owning cameras — but knowing how to use them, how to guide a family through the whole experience, and how to make sure you leave with something you’ll be proud to own for life.
