January Awards & print competitions

23rd February 2015
January was a good month for photo competitions with the highlight being a Gold award with the Societies. A Gold from them is put forward to their annual competition to win an even bigger award, it's like the photographer's version of powering up in Super Mario or the likes :)

The Gold was for the photo of a friend's Lambretta. A lovely scooter shot at an angle (directly from above) not often seen.

There was also a "Highly Commended" for a black & white shot from a wedding in January. A lovely shot (if I may say so myself) of the bride's father & other guests watching a very relaxed wedding ceremony taking place.
Highly Commendeds have a chance to be made into Gold's at the end of the year... then well... follow the power up part of this story :)

It would be great to go to the big annual end of year do and pick up a big physical award - a long year of working hard before that is even a consideration though.

But it's entering competitions that keep you keen, keep you learning and moving forward.
It's very, very easy to post your favourite photo on Facebook and have all your friends "like" it, but you don't learn anything from that.

When I shoot a wedding, and post a photo from that wedding online - I'm only after 10-20 likes , so long as they are from prospective customers.
"Likes" don't pay the bills !

January's "Societies" competition - like every month - is very tough. I don't mind saying on most months I don't win anything. In January I entered 9 photos , in 9 different categories.
But a Gold and a Highly Commended is brilliant. I'm cock-a-hoop with that.

I will now look at the non-winning photos and see why they didn't stand out as much.
Likewise I'll take on board the critique from the IPPN and The Royal Photographic Society and apply any advice that I can.

This Sunday I'm entering 4 prints into the annual print exhibition competition with the Scottish branch of The RPS. with the chance of one of those 4 being selected to go on a tour over the next year, on display in various towns.
I've not entered that in a few years, and hoping to get my last print back on Sunday :/ Not seen it since I viewed the tour in Peebles.

So - onwards & upwards, using all my power-ups to make my wedding photography better.
That's the end game there. Offering the best service I can while always learning.

G.x Super Mario level 2

Edit:

IPPN results in now too.... 2 Silver awards there. Not a bad month. :)
