Award Photo presentation

15th December 2017
Photographer Grahame Smith of GWS Photography portrait studio has picked up a top prize in a prestigious industry competition for his portrait photography skills.
Grahame, who owns the lifestyle photography business in East Link Family Park, won in the Open Portrait category at the Xperience group awards ceremony recently.
Mr Smith is one of 9 overall winners in this year’s annual Xperience Awards, from more than 4000 entries

His subject Adam Love-Rodgers was presented with a wall portrait of their image at the studio recently.
Mr Smith said he was “delighted” to have won.”The whole idea of this photo came about from an idea of a personal project on album covers… how would I shoot a single or album cover. This shot was inspired by the Oasis song “Cast No Shadow”, which is about song writers being held captive by their own work, but to me it also had another meaning. My dad passed away last October, and this song makes me feel of missed opportunities and lost hope. Adam came in for a Father’s Day shoot and I asked if he and one of his boys would oblige in my photo project. They graciously helped out and this picture was the result. When I explained the background to the photo, Adam told me of the loss of his own dad, 4 years ago. It all just tied in really well.”

Xperience chief trainer Mark Cleghorn, developed the awards to challenge members of The Xperience Group, made up of almost 100 photographic studios from across England, Scotland and Wales and Ireland to make the photographers ‘step outside their comfort zones and get even more creative every day’.

Mr Cleghorn said: “Smart phone technology makes it even harder for the professional photographer today, that is why we should always inspire our clients more than anything else, and through mastery of light and imagination we give them unique wall art for their homes.
“I was blown away by the standard of entries this year from the Xperience photographers, and Grahame’s winning portrait was unanimous with the judging panel, the portrait is full of emotional and personality with very strong message, and I must admit the story telling element brought a tear to my eye."
